Detection of sugar in urine | Place 5 ml of Benedict’s Qualitative reagent in a test tube. Add 8 drops (0.5 ml) of urine. Boil over a flame for 3 minutes, cool. You may now find that the contents of the tube have become turbid due to a precipitate, which may range from green to brick red in colour, depending on the amount of sugar present in the urine. If no sugar is present, the solution will remain clear or show a faint turbidity.
(NOTE: Streptomycin in concentrations above 200 mcg/ml in the urine gives a positive test for Benedict’s solution. Consult your doctor if you are treated with Streptomycin). Benedict’s test for sugar in urine. This solution is not intended for quantitative testing. |
